Where we work

The Alberta heating market for contractors

Alberta heats mostly with natural gas, sets its default gas commodity price monthly, and has no province-wide home heating rebate. Marketing here runs on cold weather, equipment age and financing, not fuel-switching arguments.

Written by Ali Sedighi, MBALast updated:

Alberta is the clearest gas-heating market in Canada. Three in four households heat with natural gas, winters are long and cold, and Chinook winds can swing southern Alberta from deep cold to thaw in hours. For heating contractors, the commodity price of gas matters less to the customer's decision than the reliability of the furnace on a minus-30 night.

The heating mix

The short answer: gas dominates, and electricity is a distant second.

Statistics Canada's 2023 household data shows 76% of Alberta households using natural gas and 14% using electricity for their primary heating system. Most replacement work is gas furnaces and boilers, with heat pumps appearing mainly as add-ons and in new construction.

Calgary and Edmonton are the two large competitive markets, followed by Red Deer, Strathcona County (Sherwood Park), Lethbridge and Airdrie, plus Wood Buffalo around Fort McMurray in the north.

Climate and the season

The short answer: a long season with sudden spikes.

Alberta's continental winters create steady heating demand from October to April, punctuated by severe cold snaps. Chinooks in the south can produce rapid mid-winter warming, which briefly cools call volumes before the next cold front. Ad budgets should follow forecasts closely.

Rates and prices in the news

The short answer: the default gas commodity was $1.458 per GJ in October 2026, a small part of the bill.

Direct Energy Regulated Services set the October 2026 default gas rate at $1.458 per GJ for ATCO Gas North and South customers who have not chosen a retailer, up from $1.124 in September. Typical October bills were about $101 in the north and $88 in the south for 9 GJ, so most of the bill is delivery and other charges.

On electricity, the AUC's current rates page says the regulated Rate of Last Resort is fixed from January 1, 2025 to December 31, 2026. Rates for the next period will matter to anyone selling electric heat pumps or electric backup heat from 2027.

Programs as of October 2026

The short answer: financing, not rebates, is the Alberta program story.

  • Clean Energy Improvement Program (CEIP): property-tax-based financing for energy-efficiency and renewable upgrades, offered only in participating municipalities. It can cover up to 100% of project costs, repaid through the property tax bill over terms of up to 25 years.
  • Oil to Heat Pump Affordability: the federal program's last day to apply in Alberta was July 31, 2026.
  • Federal National Heat Pump Rebate: announced October 8, 2026; check federal sources for when it opens.

We found no province-wide home heating rebate and no Canada Greener Homes Affordability agreement for Alberta as of October 2026. Confirm with each administrator before advertising.

Regulators to know

The short answer: the safety codes system, ABSA for pressure equipment, and the AUC for rates.

  • Alberta's safety codes system covers gas, plumbing, electrical, building and pressure equipment; ABSA handles boilers and pressure vessels.
  • The Alberta Utilities Commission oversees regulated utility rates.
  • Alberta's prepaid contractor licence rules apply to some businesses that take payment before work is finished and sell away from their usual place of business.

We link and summarise only; compliance questions belong with the regulator.

How we approach marketing in Alberta

The short answer: lead with reliability, timing and financing.

  1. Forecast-driven ads. Budgets rise ahead of cold fronts in Calgary and Edmonton. See heating-season ads.
  2. Replacement before failure. Content about furnace age and warning signs earns trust in autumn.
  3. Honest operating-cost talk. With cheap commodity gas, avoid promising big savings from switching. Explain delivery charges instead.
  4. City-specific local pages. Calgary and Edmonton are crowded; profiles and pages need real local detail. See local search.
